This is a summary of an online survey that asked the question:
"How Far is Too Far for a Commute to Aikido Class?"
The survey drew responses from 115 people who clicked a link posted in
the discussion forums for Aikiweb and 14 who clicked on the link through
this blog that describes similar information about our dojo's commuters (a MUCH smaller sample!). We transcribed all the data into Excel spreadsheets and made some charts (below).
These show who took the survey (age & years training) - full-sized versions of these and other charts are further down.

Check out the results below and try to find some patterns - we can do some more digging with this data with stats tools like SPSS to find correlations between factors (unfortunately, the data isn't downloadable, and copying each survey response will take about 3 hours. Maybe later, or sooner if there are people who are really interested.

Thanks again to all the people who donated their ~1:12 to do the survey!

About the survey:
- the survey site was a free web service
- the average completion time for the survey was 1 minute and 12 seconds
- all responses were anonymous and no email addresses were collected.
Only the general results are presented - we did not analyze the trends that exist among various groups (sorted by age, years of training, primary transportation, length of commute, etc.). Incomplete survey responses were not calculated in the final analysis.
About the research question:
We wanted to know how far people commute to aikido and how long the commute takes.
Instead of asking peoples' opinions of this topic, the survey gathered data on their behaviors (routines and habits). The idea is that opinions are usually based on ideals, principles and one's sense of identity - it doesn't often translate to what they do in reality. Behaviors, in contrast, are usually a better indication of peoples' opinions about a personal limit. To dig into this a bit, this survey looked at a few sub questions that can be addressed by behaviors:
- "How much time do you devote to doing aikido and how much time do you devote to getting back and forth?"
- "Have you ever changed your routine based on aikido?"
- "Has your aikido ever had to change based on your changed routine?"
Here Are the Results in Graphs for Each Question on the Survey:
How old are you?

Are you currently training?

How long have you been doing aikido?

Excluding seminars, how often do you typically attend regular classes at your home dojo?

How do you get to class and how long does it take?
